When I received the email about the May fundraiser for the Taos Pueblo Art Education Program, I knew I wanted to paint something meaningful.
The gallery asked each artist to create a 16” x 20” piece for the show, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the program. I decided to paint something deeply personal – our wedding at the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow grounds in 1993.
That year was dry. The land had been in drought, and there were concerns about grass fires. Still, the tribal council granted us permission to hold the ceremony at the pow wow grounds. The reception followed at Rick’s mother’s house.
During the ceremony, the buffalo in the neighboring field gathered at the fence, as if watching. Rick said it felt like a blessing.
Many magical things happened that day, but this painting captures the memory as I imagine it now – from above, like a bird circling over the ceremony.
