Every once and a while I’ll pick up an art magazine and be really impressed with a painting I might see. Most recently, I saw a painting by a woman who is most known for her bronzes, Martha Pettigrew.
I was taken with the sunlit quality of her colors and the simplification of shapes. I decided to take a run at getting some vibrant colors looking the way they do when the sun hits them just so in the afternoon as a thunderstorm is coming in. The piece I saw first was “Safely Bailed,” in an advertisement.
My painting changes just a few details to make it my own. I added the person in the middle ground, houses in the distance, and the overall sense of texture.
I can’t wait to apply what I learned in a composition entirely my own. Meanwhile, I am watching you, Martha, and I am taken with your work.
