“Wind and Shadows,” oil on panel, 11×14, Taos, New Mexico

“Wind and Shadows,” oil on panel, 11×14, is based on a courtyard behind Taos Art Supply. The building was once known as “The Blue Door.” The door is still there, but it no longer opens. What was once a front now sits at the back of Tres Estrellas.
The painting follows the movement of light across the surface rather than the function of the space. Shadows stretch and repeat, crossing the wall, the ground, and the objects without hierarchy. The structure holds, but the atmosphere does the work.
The blue of the door and windows remains as a fixed note against the shifting field. It suggests presence without access, a point of reference that no longer leads anywhere.
This is a painting about condition more than place. The wind is not seen, but its effects are. The shadows describe it.
