The charms of Hacienda de Los Martinez in Lower Ranchitos

Opportunities for Plein air painting are all around in Taos and Northern New Mexico.

When I give my ghost tour and someone asks just how haunted Taos is, I tell them it’s hard to go anywhere without running into a ghost story attached, somehow. I think the same is true of potential subjects for on-the-spot painting ideas.

One of my favorite places to visit on walks in my neighborhood of Lower Ranchitos is the Martinez Hacienda. I decided, last year when I had to temporarily give up my studio space, I would do a couple of small painting on site.

These paintings combine my naive style with the impasto and sgraffito style. They’re small and framed in dark brown which sets off the adobe color and unifies the short series.
